Leaving With Less Than Half a Tank
Many visitors assume Secret Beach is just a quick drive from town.
While the distance may not seem far, the round-trip journey, combined with exploring other parts of the island, can use more fuel than expected.

Waiting Too Late To Leave
Secret Beach is most enjoyable earlier in the day.
Visitors who leave town late often encounter more traffic, busier beach clubs, and fewer parking options.
During Christmas, New Year’s, Easter, Spring Break, and other busy travel periods, the roads leading north can become significantly busier than many first-time visitors expect.
An earlier start usually leads to a more relaxed experience.
Driving Too Fast On Unpaved Sections
Road conditions can change throughout the year.
Dust, potholes, loose gravel, mud, and standing water can all appear along the route.
The fastest driver rarely arrives much sooner than everyone else, but they are far more likely to hit a pothole or have an uncomfortable ride.
Take your time and enjoy the scenery.
Assuming Every Road Is Paved
Ambergris Caye continues to see road improvements, but portions of the route toward Secret Beach remain unpaved.
Visitors are sometimes surprised when pavement gives way to dirt, lime-rock, or seasonal mud.
This is normal and part of the drive north.
Driving To Secret Beach After Dark Without Experience
Many visitors stay to enjoy the sunset and then discover they are making their first nighttime golf cart drive on an unfamiliar road.
If you plan to return after dark, it helps to have already driven your golf cart around the island during the evening so you understand visibility, lighting conditions, and road hazards.
Before leaving town, make sure your headlights are working properly and that you’re comfortable driving after sunset.
Following The First Place You See
When you arrive at Secret Beach, you’ll likely be greeted by staff inviting you to a particular beach bar or restaurant.
There’s nothing wrong with accepting the invitation, but remember that Secret Beach has several different locations, each with its own atmosphere.
Take a few minutes to explore before deciding where you’d like to spend the day.
Forgetting That The Drive Is Part Of The Experience
Many visitors focus only on reaching Secret Beach.
The northern drive offers mangroves, island scenery, wildlife, and a side of Ambergris Caye that many visitors never experience.
Slow down, enjoy the journey, and remember that getting there is part of the adventure.
Assuming Road Conditions Never Change
One mistake we see regularly is visitors relying on old information from social media posts, travel forums, or videos that may have been recorded months or even years earlier.
Road conditions on Ambergris Caye can change quickly depending on weather, maintenance work, and seasonal flooding.
What was true last year—or even last month—may not reflect current conditions.
